Overview

When joining the Absa family I was placed on one of Absa’s most exciting products, MegaU, a kids banking app that allows parents to easily open a bank account for their kids, no branch visits necessary. With MegaU a parent is not only able to open an account for their kids in-app, but also… Teach their kids about earning with tasks and payments, Make their kids’ day special by sending them money, Buy their kids prepaid airtime or data. And a child can: Manage their first bank account, Get paid for doing tasks, Buy prepaid airtime or data, Get awesome free vouchers every month. I felt like this was a great opportunity to create a unique experience for youngsters together with their parents, guardians, and or caregivers

User Testing

We conducted in-depth, qualitative one-on-one interviews with kids between the ages of 10-15 years, to gain some insights that would help the product team improve on current features that were real pain points and to smooth the process of opening a bank account.

We wanted to validate and measure customer needs against the product's customer value proposition (CVP).  We also tested the usability of the key features and gained knowledge or insight on navigation, flows, and the young participants' understanding of certain words.

Our target market was

  • Lower retail affluent parents

  • Internet-savvy parents, and children

  • Smartphone users (or familiar with smartphones) both parent and child

  • Children aged 10 - 15

Design Responsibilities

I worked with the Senior UI designer to deliver a child-friendly and attractive user interface that complements the brand and includes the little bot mascot across the MegaU app. I was tasked by my design lead to Plan and implement new designs, optimize existing user interface designs, test for an intuitive experience. I was able to work well under my senior designer’s lead as well as successfully communicate changes remotely to a team of developers who were situated in another province, Cape Town, in South Africa.

Learnings

Working on MegaU I learned how to combine creativity with an awareness of the design elements, test new ideas before implementing, understand and have a passion for youthful mindsets. However my greatest learning was that a value proposition for complex projects such as this needs to be clear and strong enough right at the beginning which resulted in the project being halted and sunsetted.
